As I was reading one of Al Brouillard's articles on goal setting (highly informative - see it here: Al's goal article), I remembered this post I did a while back on another of my blogs, and thought its value could accompany it. So here it is:
Today, I want to share THE MOST IMPORTANT FIRST STEP I think anyone should do in order to achieve… well… ANYTHING they want to achieve in life.
They are called the 10 Steps to Setting Goals taken from a video series I watched by Bill Bartman.
Please be advised: By Reading and Implementing these 10 steps, you are 100x's more likely to experience fantastic results in your life.
Let’s get started.
10 Steps to Setting & Achieving Goals
1) Make sure it is YOUR goal
Too many people set out to achieve goals for others, and not themselves. While this seems very noble, it is certainly self-defeating. The single best thing you can ever do to achieve a goal is to make sure it is yours. Your heart and desire must be in it.
2) Don’t call it a Goal… Call it a PROMISE
A Harvard study on the word “goal” showed that 70% of people using this term actually miss their goals. Another Harvard study on the word “promise” showed that 98% of people using this term actually keep their promises. Subconsciously, we are more likely to keep a promise than we are to achieve a goal.
3) Clearly identify your promise
If you don’t know WHERE you want to be, then it really doesn’t matter which direction you go in. But if you have a destination, then you can have a starting point.
4) Use the tools around you
Tools meaning people. You can use the people in your life as positive and negative motivators. Positive motivators will cheer you on and lift you up. Negative motivators might laugh at you and call you crazy. It’s easy to embrace your positive motivators for obvious reasons. But you can also use your negative motivators to drive you forward as well. ie: “I’m so tired, but I want to prove so-and-so wrong. So, I’ll read the rest of this goal list. Afterall, I am getting some valuable info here for free. Don’t want to waste it.”
5) Create a Promise Plan
No business is successful without a business plan, so why not create one for your life? Here’s what it consists of:
a. Identify a clear promise
b. Put a timeframe on it. Write down when it will occur.
c. Envision it.
d. Write down WHY you want this.
e. Write down WHO will help you accomplish this.
f. Don’t worry about the HOW. You can’t know it right now. You just need to know the WHAT and the WHY.
6) Review your promise and plan 20 minutes a day
2 things happen when you do this:
a. You are consciously thinking about it.
b. You are subconsciously thinking about it.
Now you are combining the power of both trains of thought to focus on your promise.
7) Tell yourself You Will Succeed
The most important voice we ever need to listen to is our own. This was simplied by Henry Ford’s quote: “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t… You’re right.”
Tell others about your promise
3 things happen when you tell others.
a. People may come out of the woodwork to help you.
b. Others may become a negative motivator for you.
c. You learn to articulate what you want to accomplish.
9) Envision the Results
Bill Bartman tells a great story about Michael Jordan envisioning his freethrow shot. And it basically comes down to this. Jordan envisions shooting his freethrows so many times in his head, he can make one with his eyes closed. Don’t believe me? Go check it out on YouTube: “Michael Jordan freethrow eyes closed”
10) Start!
Don’t let fear of the unknown paralyze you. You don’t have to know all the answers. You don’t have to know any of the answers. Just start. And you will be on your way to Keeping your Promises.
